STAR RTM Homes Highlights 20+ Years Supporting Northern Manitoba And Indigenous Communities

WINNIPEG, MB - STAR Ready To Move Homes is highlighting more than two decades of experience supporting housing and building projects for Northern Manitoba and Indigenous communities.

A recent project with OCN included 10 residential RTM homes for families in a new community development area. Rather than relying on a single standardized model, the project incorporated several different home designs, giving the development greater variety while still allowing the homes to be built efficiently off-site.

STAR is now working with OCN on another project involving three RTM homes being adapted for community uses connected to public safety and restorative justice. Existing STAR stock homes are being modified to suit requirements outside a typical residential application, demonstrating how RTM construction can be adapted when a community has a more specialized need.

"Every community and every project is different, so we try to understand what they need and find a practical way to make it work," said Sean Goodlow, Sales Manager at STAR RTM Homes. "That can mean adapting the design, helping with selections, or working through transportation challenges. A lot of these relationships have been built over many years, and that trust is important to us."

Off-site construction can offer significant advantages for projects in Northern and remote communities. Homes are built at STAR's Winnipeg site, where construction, inspections, and quality-control processes can be completed in a centralized environment before the finished home is transported to its destination.

This approach can reduce the amount of work that must take place on-site, help projects move ahead more efficiently, and give community representatives greater visibility into the construction process. Customers can also follow progress remotely through STAR's My STAR Home portal.

Transportation remains one of the most complex parts of delivering RTM homes to remote locations. Narrow bridges, access restrictions, and winter road conditions can all affect whether a completed home can reach a community. During one OCN project, STAR and its transportation partners identified an alternate route around a bridge that could not accommodate the home. Although the route was longer, the delivery was able to proceed.

That type of coordination is a key part of STAR's approach to Northern projects. The company works closely with community representatives, transportation providers, and project stakeholders to identify potential obstacles early and look for workable solutions.

Community representatives can also visit STAR's Winnipeg location to meet directly with drafting and design staff, review finishes and material selections, and tour completed display homes. For larger housing projects, this allows multiple decisions to be made in one location while still giving communities flexibility in layouts, finishes, and home designs.
