It shows that rural roadways carry a disproportionate share of fatal crashes statewide. The report, compiled from state and national crash records, is used to guide highway safety planning and funding decisions across Utah. State Report Shows Rural Roads Carry Higher Crash Severity
According to the report, rural counties accounted for only 17 percent of Utah's total crashes between 2020 and 2024, yet were the site of 40 percent of all traffic fatalities during that period. The report also found the rural fatal crash rate reached 1.07 per 100 million vehicle miles traveled, compared with 0.68 in urban areas.
The report attributes part of this disparity to narrower shoulders, longer emergency response times, and fewer lighting and guardrail improvements on rural routes compared with urban corridors. The report also noted that average total transport time from crash scene to hospital reaches 43.9 minutes in rural counties, compared with 35.2 minutes in urban counties.
Regional Repair Patterns Match Statewide Trends
The shop said vehicles arriving for repair after incidents on rural and canyon-adjacent roads near Riverton and the surrounding Salt Lake Valley often show more extensive suspension and frame damage than vehicles involved in low-speed, urban area collisions. Its technicians attribute this to higher travel speeds and the presence of fixed roadside objects on undivided rural routes.
Separately, national weather crash data compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recorded an estimated 101,390 police reported crashes during snow and sleet conditions in 2023. Photograph the damage and the road or weather condition involved, and note the location and date.
Avoid driving a vehicle with visible structural damage until it has been inspected.
Request a suspension and frame inspection even when damage appears limited to a bumper or panel.
