ABILENE, Texas, Aug. 28, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Natura Resources LLC, a national leader in advanced nuclear technology, announced significant progress in deploying its innovative Molten Salt Reactor (MSR), the Natura MSR-1. This project aims to pioneer safe, low-cost, and efficient energy solutions while addressing vital needs such as the ever-increasing demand for energy, clean water solutions, and medical isotope production.
The MSR-1 project has been significantly strengthened by a landmark nuclear fuel allocation from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). This provision of high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) is crucial, as it ensures the Natura MSR-1 has the necessary fuel to operate, maintaining the project's clear trajectory toward successful deployment. The DOE's commitment underscores the national priority of advancing innovative nuclear technologies to support clean and sustainable energy.
This is the latest in a string of major milestones including:
- The completion of the Dillard Science and Engineering Research Center (SERC) at Abilene Christian University (ACU) in August 2023. Purpose-built to house the Natura MSR-1, this state-of-the-art facility has optimized the reactor's construction process.
- The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) issuing a construction permit for the deployment of the Natura MSR-1 at ACU, making it the first liquid-fueled advanced reactor ever approved for construction by the NRC. Additionally, in June of 2025, Natura finalized the detailed design of the Natura MSR-1, which has enabled the commencement of procurement activities for the MSR-1 system.
- The Texas State Legislative allocation of $120 million to Texas Tech University, which will be distributed to support the construction of the Natura MSR-1.
- The DOE selecting Natura Resources as one of the initial participants in the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Reactor Pilot Program, which aims to accelerate the development and deployment of advanced nuclear reactor technologies. This selection highlights Natura's leadership in advanced reactor innovation and its commitment to advancing clean energy solutions, as emphasized in the DOE's announcement on August 12, 2025.
"We are excited to have achieved these milestones and are grateful for the support from the DOE, the NRC, the State of Texas, and our university partners," said Doug Robison, Founder and CEO of Natura Resources. "The Natura MSR-1 represents a transformative step toward sustainable energy, and we are committed to delivering a safe, efficient, and impactful reactor that will serve as a model for future advanced nuclear projects."
The Natura MSR-1 is designed to operate at low pressure using a liquid fuel system, providing inherent safety advantages and the potential to produce clean energy, desalinate water, and generate medical isotopes. This project positions Natura Resources at the forefront of the nation's clean energy transition.
