Nutrition experts discussed the science behind intake guidance for dietary bioactives and how to turn it into clear, meaningful messages.
WASHINGTON, Nov. 5, 2026 /CNW/ -- The International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) U.S. & Canada recently hosted a webinar, "Translating Bioactive Research into Recommendations for Consumers," on October 28, 2026 to explore how available evidence can inform intake recommendations on bioactive compounds. The webinar drew a wide audience with over 250 registrants from government, academia, and industry. Dietary bioactives are compounds in foods or dietary supplements that affect health but are not required to meet basic nutritional needs. As nutrition science has shifted its focus from preventing nutrient deficiencies to optimizing health, dietary bioactives have become a growing area of research. For compounds such as lutein, flavanols, and anthocyanins, translating research findings into intake recommendations requires careful evaluation of study quality, consistency of findings, intake levels, and clearly defined health outcomes. Without evidence-based guidance, consumers and health professionals may have difficulty interpreting what the research means for everyday dietary choices.
This 90-minute webinar examined the scientific foundations needed to establish dietary bioactive recommendations and translate them into clear information that supports consumer awareness and understanding. Through expert presentations and discussions, speakers highlighted how research, structured evidence evaluation, and collaboration across scientific disciplines can strengthen the path from emerging findings to intake guidance.
"Translating bioactive research into intake recommendations requires a rigorous, evidence-based approach that serves health professionals, industry stakeholders, and consumers alike," said Stephane Vidry, PhD, Executive Director of ILSI U.S. & Canada and ILSI Global. "This webinar brings together experts from academia, government, and industry to examine how scientific evidence can be evaluated and translated into clear, meaningful guidance for consumers."
Program Highlights:
- Bioactives need a different evaluation framework from essential nutrients for developing guidance. Due to key differences between nutrients and non-nutrient bioactives, such as their functions and target populations, different approaches are required for setting guidance.
- Foods and supplements should be evaluated differently. Supplements raise distinct questions and should be evaluated separately for food-based guidance.
- Meaningful outcomes beyond chronic disease. Research can evaluate outcomes relevant to everyday health and function, including vision, cognitive performance, and quality of life.
- Rigor at every stage. Scientific rigor matters both when intake guidance is developed and when that guidance is turned into messages for consumers.
- Consumers want health guidance they can trust. Consumers want to act on their health and well-being and look for choices backed by evidence. Credible, consistent evidence-based messages from scientists, registered dietitians, and industry are key to helping them do so.
- Guidance needs many disciplines. Developing guidance requires expertise across nutrition, food science, analytical chemistry, agriculture, industry, and the scientific organizations responsible for developing the recommendations.
- Research investment is essential. Progress depends on support from government, industry, and other funding partners for well-designed randomized controlled feeding trials that measure meaningful outcomes.
About the ILSI Bioactives, Functional Foods, and Supplements Portfolio
ILSI's Bioactives, Functional Foods, and Supplements Research Portfolio operates at the intersection of cutting-edge science and practical health solutions. The portfolio is dedicated to advancing public health by establishing optimal intake ranges for bioactive compounds, identifying critical knowledge gaps, and improving scientific communication to heighten consumer awareness. Through evidence-based guidance, the portfolio works to ensure the safe and effective incorporation of bioactives into daily nutrition.
